Violin mutes

Violin mutes are violin accessories that are attached onto the violin while playing, usually during practicing. Other than playing some violin pieces , violinists generally do not use them during performances.

silence

They are attached onto the bridge of the violin to dampen its vibrations, and hence resulting in a softer sound. The reduced volume allows musicians to contain the sound within their ears, during orchestra or personal practice, or during the night.

Professional violinists may use different mutes before settling on one, as different mutes softens the volume to a different degree.

Mutes also come in various shapes and sizes for the violin, but the common headache among violinists is...

Which one should I use?

Violin Mutes

Right! There are really so many violin mutes in the market . And even though their common use is to soften the violin, violinist still have such a wide range to choose from.

Before you get one yourself, let's look at what you may need look out for...

First, and most importantly, it must be easy to use. It must be easy to fit on, easy to remove, and be able to do that fast too! Violinists, especially playing in orchestras, only have a moment to fix and remove their mutes.

Secondly, we look at the sound quality, after its volume has been reduced by the mute. The mute should only soften the volume, and should not dampen the fine quality of the sound produced.

Thirdly, some violinists prefer mutes that look nice and compatible with their instruments. They may try a few and get the overall impression of the instrument first before purchasing.
