Tune Violin with Piano

The Simple Steps to do it

a piano

Another effective way to tune your violin is to tune it with a piano or keyboard. Tune violin with piano is more recommended for intermediate violin players, who may have already used chromatic tuners to tune their violin.

Beginner violin players are recommended to learn how to tune a violin with a chromatic tuner first, before they learn to tune violin with piano. Tuning with the piano requires the player to recognize the notes(G D A E) accurately before they can tune their violin well.

What you need:

  • Your violin

  • Piano or Electric Keyboard

I would generally prefer an electric keyboard to a piano, as the piano can get out of tune, while the electric one would not. Alright, so let's start tuning violin with piano!

tune violin with piano

1. Let's start by finding the notes on the piano which correspond to the strings we are tuning. Use the middle C as a reference point, so you will be tuning at exactly the name note as your string.

2. Play the G on the piano (shown in the picture).

3. Play Open G on your violin.

4. Turn the peg of the G string on your violin. Turn it away from you to tighten the string(if it's flat), or turn it towards you to loosen the string(if it's sharp).

5. After tuning Open G, repeat step 2 to 4 on other strings too(D A E).

That's easy yea :D

*Just remember to tune the strings until they sound the same as the piano or keyboard. All strings are played Open.
