Taking care of your violin is important if you want it to perform well. It is best to store the violin in a safe and secure place after playing, to prevent unnecessary damage done to it.
Damages and cracks are commonly seen on the instruments when proper care is not observed. Violins can be expensive, and even though repairs can make up the cracks and damages, the value of the violins will drop drastically.
Let's see what are the precautions we can take, and the methods to store the violin...
Storage of the violin
When the violin is not in play, the best place to keep the violin would be a closed violin case. However, this is often easily said than done.
Many violinists, especially beginner players, like to leave their instruments around the house , on chairs, on their bed, or worse, hanging them on the musical stand.
Placing the violins at these areas makes the violins very vulnerable to serious injuries. They are being exposed to unnecessary dangers, and many damages are caused by carelessness and negligence of the violinist.
Putting the violin back into the case (closed it, not leave it open), will prevent any objects hitting or knocking the violin.
In keeping the bow in the violin case, secure the bow with the bow holder opposite the chinrest. In the case when the bow fell off the holder, it will fall on the chinrest, and not the violin surface.
Many damages are done to the violin when bows are not secured, and fell on the violin when the case is closed.
You have to remember to store the violin away from extreme temperatures and humidity. It should not put under direct sunlight and heaters .
Violins are fragile instruments, and it is easy for the violin to crack and fall apart under these extreme conditions. If damage is observed, it is recommended to repair it immediately.
If there should be any repairs to be done, you must hand your violin over to an experienced and professional luthier.
